WHAT DOES MARRIAGE IS A MINISTRY MEAN?

Updated: Dec 3, 2021

We have found that there are several churchy marriage words and phrases used to describe marriage in the Christian home and place of worship. But these phrases are rarely accompanied by an explanation that clarifies their meaning or application to everyday life as a spouse. Whether you are engaged, a seasoned spouse, or just curious about Christian marriage, we believe learning and understanding the fundamentals is vital to having a strong healthy marriage.

Below are six terms with definitions and scripture references to help you on your journey:

Becoming One

Redirecting your allegiance from your nuclear family and choosing to implement daily habits that create closeness, connection and love between you and your spouse (new family).

Genesis 2:24

Covenant Marriage

The understanding that the oath and agreement before God binds husband and wife until death, not disappointment.

Ecclesiastes 4:12

Headship

The call from God for a husband to own the responsibility to sacrificially love and serve his wife and children.

Ephesians 5:23; 1 Corinthians 11:13

Submission

The call from God for a wife to honor, respect, and affirm her husband's leadership by putting her faith in God.

Genesis 2:22-24; Ephesians 5:24

Christ-centered marriage

A marriage where the couple strives to continually seek the things above, and put to death earthly tendencies and desires. Instead of choosing selfishness, immorality, and impatience, they choose to put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. They are renewed by the word of Christ in all aspects of their lives, and they have a clear understanding that marriage goes beyond their happiness or fulfillment. They understand that it is about their holiness.

Colossians 3:1,5,8,12-13,16; Matthew 6:33

Marriage is a Ministry

The selfless commitment to willingly and wholeheartedly serve each other and ultimately help their spouse become more like Christ.

Matthew 19:6; Philippians 2:4-8

We strongly encourage you to go through each scripture and continue reading about this.
